The MHW Group is comprised of four companies, providing rail, truck, and warehousing cold chain services.
Rail transportation
Cryo-Trans, Inc. (CTI) secured a patent in 1986 for a cryogenic railcar which revolutionized the frozen rail industry. Between 1986 and 1995, CTI developed long term leases for approximately 500 of these cars. In 2000 and 2001, due to an inordinate increase in the price of CO2, CTI converted the majority of its fleet to mechanical refrigeration.
CTI is currently constructing 75 new 72 foot interior mechanically refrigerated railcars, which will bring its total fleet size in excess of 925 railcars. Each railcar is equipped with state-of-the-art two way GPS systems. All cars are leased to major food processing companies.
CTI provides, within its Rail Management Program, a complete menu of services including rail rate negotiation, tracking and expediting, freight bill payment and audit, lane-by-lane performance analysis and consultation services. CTI is the largest private fleet owner of refrigerated rail cars in North America.
Truck transportation
In 2005, the MHW Group formed Cryo-Trans Logistics (CTL) in order to provide a full asset based end-to-end distribution system. CTL has arrangements with a long list of dedicated carriers for its truck transportation needs.
Shippers, through the MHW Group, now have the ability to ship long haul via our rail fleet, transload or store at one of our public warehouse facilities, and ship via truck arranged by us to any forward destination.
Warehousing
The MHW Group, in 1975, opened its first public refrigerated warehouse, Mt. Airy Cold Storage, in Mt. Airy, Maryland. Mt. Airy was expanded in 1976, 1980, and 1985. Chambersburg Cold Storage, located in Chambersburg, Pa., opened in 1995, and then expanded in 1997 and 2000. Mt. Airy Cold Storage was replaced in 2007 by Perryville Cold Storage, located in Perryville, Maryland.
We have constructed private facilities in 2001 (Waseca, Minn.) and 2002 (Darien, Wis.).
